Museum store associate

 Position: Museum Store Associate 
Reports to: Director of Operations 
Objective: This position is responsible for orientating visitors, selling admissions and memberships, performing general receptionist duties, and day-to-day retail store operations. 
 
Principle Responsibilities

  1. Greet and orient visitors to the Musuem at the Bighorns including exhibits, upcoming events, and other historical points of interest. 
  1. Sell admissions to the Musuem at the Bighorns. 
  1. Sell Musuem at the Bighorns memberships and encourage visitors to join. 
  1. Sell museum merchandise. 
  1. Stock merchandise as needed. 
  1. Manage incoming and outgoing mail and deliveries.  
  1. Refer visitors to the appropriate staff regarding donations of money, artifacts, archival materials, or other items of concern. 
  1. Stock brochures as needed and keep racks from looking empty. 
  1. Answer the telephone, transfer calls to the appropriate staff and take messages for staff. 
  1. Perform general clerical duties as requested. 
  1. Participate in in-service and other training as scheduled. 
  1. General cleaning of the merchandise shelving, the main lobby and retail space, monitor cleanliness of the bathrooms and keep clean and tidy, vacuum the entry vestibule and sweep the main lobby and retail space.  If any items need attention, work with the Director of Operations for resolution. 
  1. Assist in opening and closing the museum as needed. 
  1. Perform additional duties as assigned. 

 
 
 
Job Knowledge and Skills: 
-Experience and knowledge of computers or a willingness to learn related software running on Windows operating systems, Microsoft Office Suite, Past -Perfect Museum software, and Shopify POS. 
-Knowledge of basic history and/or willingness to learn. 
-Able to communicate effectively with both adults and children in a courteous and professional manner. 
-High School diploma or equivalent preferred 
 
Working Conditions: 
-Be available, if necessary, to staff the museum store for special events held at the museum. 
-The ability to lift 30 pounds, sit and stand for long periods of time. 
-Able to work independently, at times, representing the museum’s visitor services.  
-Able to multitask front desk responsibilities during busy times. 
 
Work Schedule & Compensation 
-Able to work up to a 30-hour work week, including weekends and evenings throughout the year (weekdays can vary). 
-Hourly Wage: $15.00

Sheridan County Historical Society doing business as the Museum at the Bighorns is a local and regional history & cultural museum located in Sheridan, Wyoming. The museum’s mission is to preserve and share our rich heritage engaging present and future generations. Currently, the museum is in an expansion project with moving and opening to a new museum site on Sheridan's Main Street. We look forward to having a fully open and accessible museum space in 2026 and expanding our team with visitor services staff.
