MAINTENANCE & GROUNDS MANAGER
Ucross Foundation is seeking a Maintenance and Grounds Manager to oversee and maintain the facilities, grounds, and equipment on its scenic 300-acre artist residency campus. Upholding our mission to support working artists and serve as a responsible steward of our historic ranch, the ideal candidate will be an experienced manager, have strong communications skills, and be able to troubleshoot and problem solve.
Reporting to the President/Executive Director, the Maintenance and Grounds Manager will run a crew of year-round and seasonal workers. The ideal candidate will be organized, flexible, and able to work productively with a variety of individuals and groups, as well as value the arts and holistic land management.
ABOUT UCROSS
Since 1983, Ucross has provided a rare gift in today's world — uninterrupted time — along with workspace and living accommodations to competitively selected visual artists, writers, composers, and choreographers on its spectacular 20,000-acre working cattle ranch, located between Sheridan and Buffalo in northern Wyoming. Each year, Ucross supports approximately 150 artists, as well as thousands of community members and travelers who visit the Ucross Art Gallery and The Park at Ucross, where they host a slate of public arts events.
The Ucross staff upholds the nonprofit’s internal values of excellence and teamwork. In addition to weekly staff meetings, the team gathers for a weekly staff lunch, which is created by the culinary team and includes an optional six-minute lunch-and-learn presentation.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Oversees and maintains 300 acres of grounds, 21 buildings, and a range of utility systems, vehicles, and equipment, ensuring all are safe, clean, and in working order
- Oversees irrigation systems, lawn care, plumbing, septic systems, electrical repairs, HVAC, carpentry, painting, and pest control
- Serves as occasional on-call responder for facilities and grounds emergencies
- Manages a rolling punch list of capital improvements and maintenance activities, operating within an approved budget
- Oversees safety and security issues for facilities, grounds, and equipment
- Maintains up-to-date records for all buildings and equipment
- Supervises and schedules maintenance staff members
- Obtains bids from, schedules, and oversees contractors, as needed
- Works with the Ucross farmer to ensure healthy, holistic native landscaping; supports with watering and other farm projects as needed
- Provides assistance when requested for artist needs, e.g., luggage support, bicycle repairs, etc.
- Provides key maintenance support for public events
- Represents Ucross to the public with a positive attitude and demonstrates strong personal commitment to the organization’s mission and activities
- Works with fellow staff members, artists, board members, visitors and others in a congenial and respectful way
- Other duties and projects as assigned
SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
- 5-10 years of experience managing staff and grounds
- Solid understanding of and ability to troubleshoot and repair: irrigation pumps, HVAC systems, septic systems, carpentry, electrical, mechanical, vehicles, and plumbing
- Strong communication skills and ability to work across departments
- Relevant computer skills, including Office 365
- Strong project management skills
HOURS
- Typically 40 hours a week, five days a week
- Occasional nights and weekends
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to sit or stand at a workstation for up to 40 hours/week
- Ability to perform responsibilities listed above, as well as mow, occasionally lift objects weighing 50 pounds or more and perform other physically demanding tasks associated with grounds and facilities maintenance
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
The salary range is $55,000 to $65,000, commensurate with experience, with a generous benefits package, including:
